PEANUTS

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that untamed children at higher risk of developing food allergies not eat peanut butter until they are three years old. Your wild infant would be considered at “higher risk” if you or a family member has food allergies, asthma, eczema, or hay fever.

If you do decide to give your wild toddler some peanut butter, keep in mind that despite the sharpness of their little teeth, young kids have not yet perfected the art of eating. One thing they really enjoy is swallowing without chewing, and sticky foods like peanut butter can become a choking hazard. To avoid this issue, spread the peanut butter thinly on a cracker or bread, and don’t serve the peanut butter in “dollops.” In fact, dollops of anything are probably a bad idea during the “swallow without chewing” phase. You should also make sure that your child is seated while eating, and that there is an adult human overseeing the peanut butter–eating maneuver.
